Foundational NVC Skills: Requests
A Telecourse with John Kinyon

This telecourse will be very experiential and offer practice with the following aspects of requests:

  • Requests vs. demands – saying “yes” only if it’s play
  • Present and positive action language
  • Compassionate giving and receiving – acting from the enjoyment of meeting needs, contributing to well being, and enriching life
  • Interdependence – seeking to value everyone’s needs
  • Seeing our needs and requests as a gift to others, and seeing others’ needs and requests as a gift to us

coupleOverview

NVC founder Marshall Rosenberg often describes NVC as focusing on two questions: (1) “What’s alive in us?” and (2) “What would make life more wonderful for us and others?” The more we can keep our attention on these two things, the more likely we are to live the life we most want.

Requests are a way to manifest the second question – What would we like to do, or ask others to do, that would contribute to our wellbeing and the wellbeing of others?

Effective requests are specific and are directly linked to our feelings and needs. They are one way we can take responsibility for our own wellbeing, experience self-empowerment, and help others feel more at ease in our presence.
