Email: nvcmediation@johnkinyon.com Website www.johnkinyon.com John Kinyon has offered communication and conflict resolution to people around the world, including work with Afghan tribal elders along the Pakistani border in early 2002. John specializes in Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and particularly in NVC mediation -- applying the language, skills and principles of NVC to the process of mediating conflict within oneself, with others, and supporting others who are in conflict. Over the past 7 years, he has co-developed with colleague Ike Lasater NVC mediation training that now includes 5-day residential retreats and year-long immersion programs in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. He has been a trainer of the international Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) since 2000 and is a co-founder of the Bay Area NVC organization (BayNVC). He has studied and worked closely with NVC founder Marshall Rosenberg since 1998 and has been regularly invited by him to be a staff trainer at 9-day international intensive trainings. John’s emphasis within this work is developing principles and practices for NVC and mediation as a spiritual practice. John has mediated conflicts on just about every level of human relationship, including couples, family, community, business, legal contexts and institutions. In organizations he has had particular experience with small and family businesses. John’s mediation practice has included an entire graduate faculty of the University of California at Los Angeles, the Executive vice Chancellor and all the vice chancellors at another UC system university, numerous small and family businesses, families with inheritance issues, faculty and administration in alternative schools, personal and business partnership dissolutions, and individuals and groups desiring conflict coaching and communication training support. John’s professional background is in academic psychology and psychotherapy, particularly Carl Rogers’ study of empathic listening, genuineness, unconditional positive regard and life’s “actualizing tendency” for growth and healing, and also Mahatma Gandhi’s life and work applying nonviolence to social change. John received his B.A. from the University of San Francisco, where he majored in studies of psychology and philosophy and played for their nationally ranked soccer team. He went on to receive an M.S. degree in clinical psychology from Penn State University, spending 5 years of doctoral training working as a psychotherapist with individuals and groups, and as a research assistant at the Penn State Stress and Anxiety Disorders Institute. After graduate school, John helped start and develop a small business in the gourmet food industry, and then went on start two NVC businesses. John lives with his wife and three children in the San Francisco Bay Area. Overview This class is for people who have already taken an introductory NVC mediation training with John Kinyon, Ike Lasater, Jim Manske, or Jori Manske. With a more experienced group the practice and learning starts at an advanced level!
The emphasis is on interpersonal (self-other) mediation and how this integrates with formally and informally helping others who are in conflict. In the class, the same learning structure is used as in the Level 1 course, including brief presentations, demonstrations, practice in break-out groups, coaching in the whole group and group harvesting of the learning. In this series, however, there is the opportunity to practice with more experienced participants and to work with greater intensity and more challenging role plays. In terms of content, more subtle distinctions and skills with the mediation model emerge as the learning and connection deepen. With the Enemy Image Process, you will learn how to use it with yourself when mediating your own conflicts, and in pre and post mediation when facilitating between others and with conflict coaching when helping others to have their own conflict conversations. It is also used to care for yourself (i.e., mediator self-care) as you engage in supporting people with their conflicts. “At a time of escalated tensions and unexpressed concerns, John's experience and inspirational style with NVC helped to facilitate a reconnection between the principles of the business. After the breakdown in communication, his skills helped create a stronger foundation of trust and empathy, where each person could be heard. This enabled us to move ahead into a creative dynamic process of strategies and goal setting for the company.” - Selma Aslin and Tehra Braren, business owner and company director Class Schedule: Prerequisites: This class series is for people who have already taken an introductory NVC mediation workshop with John Kinyon, Ike Lasater, Jim Manske, or Jori Manske.
